DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION (DBS) PROGRAMMING FOR MOVEMENT DISORDERS

It’s a brain pacemaker surgery, we generally advice for advanced parkinsonism, severe dystonia and drug refectory tremors. This surgery requires a dedicated team work of movement disorder specialist, neurosurgeon and neuropsychologist.

Deep brain stimulation involves implantation of neurostimulator, similar to cardiac pacemaker, called as Internal Pulse Generator (IPG), to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted structures of the brain. This stimulation works like a sort of ‘brain pacemaker’ which interferes with the signals that cause disabling movements, and hence reducing abnormal body movements.

In DBS, Surgery is only first step of this procedure, after surgery you need a regular follow up with movement disorders specialist for programming and medication adjust based on your detailed clinical examination by Neurophysician, preferably Movement disorders specialist.

CONDITIONS THAT ARE TREATED USING DBS ARE:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Dystonia
  • Essential tremor
  • Epilepsy
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Others

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DBS?

You may be a candidate for DBS if you have:

  • a movement disorder with worsening symptoms (tremor, stiffness) and your medications have begun to lose effectiveness.
  • troubling “off” periods when your medication wears off before the next dose can be taken.
  • troubling “on” periods when you develop medication-induced dyskinesias (excessive wiggling of the torso, head, and/or limbs).
  • Severe and Disabling generalised dystonia
  • Severe and drug refractory tremor

DBS PROGRAMMING CLINIC AHMEDABAD – DR. BARAD’S CLINIC

Our Movement disorder specialist and staff have specialized training in DBS programming. Your initial DBS programming visit is a comprehensive evaluation of all of the electrodes on the DBS leads, before DBS starts. Using this information, we can set the initial DBS parameters with great accuracy.
